Uniper’s compliance culture

We define compliance risks as the possibility of major legal proceedings, monetary fines, and damage to our reputation. They may result from misconduct or violations of laws and regulations, either by our staff or by third parties acting on our behalf.

Our Group-wide Compliance Management System (CMS) mitigates these risks by setting uniform standards for addressing them. We periodically conduct compliance risk assessments of the CMS, and, if necessary, take steps to refine it.

Strategic plan

Commitments

  • Further strengthen our compliance culture and protect our business from corruption risks
  • Foster effective, accountable, and transparent institutions at all levels

Targets

  • Conduct ESG due diligence of 100% of counterparties by year-end 2022

ESG risk management

We systematically assess the environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks that could arise from our operations. One way is by screening our counterparties with exposure to ESG risks. The objective is to avoid doing business with counterparties causing or contributing to severe adverse ESG impacts, including human rights. At the end of 2021, 59% of active counterparties had been screened. Our goal is to assess the rest by the end of 2022.

Zero tolerance of corruption and bribery

Uniper has business dealings with counterparties worldwide, including in countries with a high risk of corruption. Our Know-Your-Counterparty (KYC) Policy helps us identify, review, and report the most important compliance risks posed by new counterparties. Our companies in Europe used KYC processes to assess and approve 405 new counterparties in 2021.

Training our people

We regularly train employees in policies and systems that help prevent corruption. In 2021 we introduced a new eLearning module on the basic principles of the Uniper Code of Conduct. By year-end, 89% of our employees in Europe had completed it.

Safeguarding personal data

The protection and secure handling of employee and customer data have a high priority for us. Data protection is crucial to avoid fines and prevent harm to our company’s reputation. Putting appropriate measures in place enables us to reduce these risks and deepen the trust of our customers and employees. As a matter of course, we ensure the same level of data protection level with our service providers as inside our company.
